Square Inc. (SQ) stock has declined by over 26% from its highs as part of the broader technology-led stock market sell-off. However, some options traders are betting the stock rises 15% by the middle of March. The bullish outlook comes despite analysts slashing their fourth-quarter estimates for the company.
Square reported better than expected third-quarter results on November 7. Earnings came in 16% higher than estimates while revenue beat by 4%. But the company issued mixed fourth-quarter guidance, with earnings coming in below estimates and revenue coming in slightly higher. The stock sank following the results. Not surprisingly, options traders had previously been betting the stock would drop after the results.

Bullish Bets
The open interest on the $80 calls for expiration on March 15 has increased nearly fivefold since November 8 to 10,000 contracts. A buyer of those calls would need the stock to rise by 15% to $86.25 from its price of $75.25 on November 8.
Headwinds
Despite the bullish bets, the stock is facing many headwinds. Most notably, analysts have reduced Square's earnings per share by 7% to $0.14 for the fourth quarter. However, revenue estimates have increased by 3% to $452.9 billion.

Additionally, analysts are reducing their earnings forecast for 2019 and 2020. For example, analysts lowered their earnings estimates for 2019 by 5% to $0.75 per share since July. Interestingly, revenue estimates for 2019 have risen by 13% to $2.2 billion. The higher revenue and lower earnings estimates suggest that analysts are looking for margin erosion in future quarters.

Expensive
Analysts are raising their price targets on the stock and now see the stock rising by 18% to $86.70. The shares don't come cheap trading at a 2019 P/E ratio of 98, which is remarkably high and much higher than other payment processor companies such as PayPal Holdings Inc. (PYPL). That means the stock has little room for any earnings shortfall in the future. Should the company continue to see earnings growth decelerate, that high earnings multiple will have to fall further, and that means the stock is likely to struggle.
